Hi, I'm Leah, and I'm terrible at writing "about me" sections. So I'm going to focus specifically on things that are relevant to this blog.
The geeky stuff:
I grew up on a steady diet of Star Trek, Star Wars, and virtually every science fiction or fantasy book I could get my hands on. My father owns an extensive library of them, so I always had my nose buried in a book. I started to connect with other geeks online at around 15 (on the official Star Wars forum, of all things!) and since then I've never looked back.
To me being a geek means being passionate about something, and wanting to share your passion with the people around you. So when I say I'm a geek, I kind of mean that's my entire personality. If I'm excited about something, I will probably want to engage with others who are excited about the same things. That's why I have a blog!
The jewelry stuff:
I've been making jewelry on-and-off for almost ten years now. I don't even remember how I got started, but I do know why- because no one told me that I couldn't. Thinking back, I don't think it ever occurred to me that I should learn how to do it, I just did. I incorporated new techniques into my repertoire as I encountered them. I opened my Etsy store in 2010, and although I haven't gotten much traffic, I have some happy customers. I'm currently working on bringing some new life into my store, hopefully I'll be updating the look, adding a banner, and adding some new designs!
The nail art stuff:
In late 2011 I decided to stop biting my nails. I've tried to stop biting dozens of times in my life, but this time I seemed to find a strategy that worked- I wore brightly colored nail polish, which made me much more conscious of my nails, which in turn helped curbed the biting, an unconscious action.
Then one of my friends posted a photo of her water marbled nails, and it changed my life. I don't even mean that as hyperbole- it literally changed my life. A new obsession was born. I started hoarding nail polish, I followed dozens of nail art blogs, I started clumsily groping my way into the world of nail art, and I discovered the subculture of geeky nail art. Since then I've worked at four sci-fi conventions, opening a booth where I offer geek-inspired manicures. It's not very profitable, but it's so much fun! I hope to keep doing art booths basically forever.
The ADHD stuff:
This isn't as happy as my previous sections- I was diagnosed in 2012 with ADHD, and I'm still in the process of seeking treatment and refining the diagnosis. It's very difficult to find proper treatment and diagnosis as an adult, since it's perceived as a "childhood disorder". It's not. It's a lifelong state of being. And the fact that I was only diagnosed with it now does not change the fact that I have been experiencing the effects of ADHD for my entire life. I have the beginnings of a vlog where I discuss my experiences, but it's something that I find very hard to update because of the amount of time it consumes. I do hope to continue to update sporadically, but I make no promises.
Contact information:
If you need to contact me for any reason, please email thefortysecond@gmail.com. I may update this section further if I find the need to use a separate business account. (and yes, I have other email addresses. If you've heard about one of them from me personally, odds are I don't mind if you use it. I don't promise that I check it regularly, though!)
Thank you for reading!
